
Jana Barker, the long-time executive director of DFW’s Brighter Tomorrow’s Women’s Shelter, is quite a woman.
Despite incredibly long hours and low pay, she’s been directing the assisting of thousands of domestic violence and sexual assault victims for almost 20 years.
I wrote the following story about her for the Dallas Morning News because she deserves so much more praise for what’s she’s accomplished.
For Jana Barker, it’s all about the victims – the hundreds of victims of domestic violence and sexual assault whom the Brighter Tomorrows Women’s Shelter assists each year to turn their lives around across Dallas-Ft. Worth and beyond.
That’s why, 19 difficult years after helping to found its first facility in Grand Prairie, that she continues to serve as its first and only paid Executive Director.

Brighter Tomorrow’s 12th annual “Chocolate & Chic” event raised $60,000 for victims of domestic and sexual violence May 1, 2008 at the Marriott Los Colinas Hotel.
Featured speaker was actor and former athlete Victor Rivers, author of “A Private Family Matter,” the story of the abuse he experienced in his own home.
