Ladies, don’t settle for abusive men!

June 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Chris&Rihanna

Ever since Chris Brown was charged with beating, choking and biting Rihanna during their Feb. fight, it’s been rumored that Chris had hit her before but she kept coming back to him anyway.

That’s exactly the reason why so many people and society in general has turned their backs on abused women – because they keep going back for more.

Most reasonably well-adjusted people just wouldn’t do that, and they can’t understand – nor do they want to – why women would keep going back for more.

We have to teach women that it’s not a victim’s fault if someone hits her, but it IS the victim’s fault if she keeps going back for more.

Our nation needs to help millions of girls and women how to improve their self-esteem and quit settling for boys and men who physically, sexually or verbally abuse or demean them.

Tragically, so many girls and women accept this demeaning treatment from their boyfriends and husbands because they grew up being treated that way by their fathers, step-fathers, mothers and other family members. They either think that’s just the way it is for everybody, or they just don’t deserve any better.

Ladies, there are so many good men out there! Abuse is NOT the way it is for most people!

We applaud Dove soap for its fine Campaign for Real Beauty to help girls to build their self-esteem! More groups need to take such commendable actions!

Singer Chris Brown accepting responsibility for his actions?

June 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Chris-Brown-during-his-he-001

After singer Chris Brown pled guilty yesterday to beating, choking and biting Rihanna in a fight Feb. 8, his attorney, Mark Geragos, said Chris was accepting responsibility for his actions.

Hooray! And it’s about time! Whether he really is or not remains to be seen, but at least it sounds good!

We all have to accept responsibility for our actions, and then accept the consequences. As I’ve often been told, we can choose what we want to do but we can’t choose the consequences. They’re usually fixed, in one way or another.

Millions more men (and women) who have chosen to lose control need to accept responsibility for their actions, as well. Many of you probably need to get help with doing so. No shame in that!

Many abusers grow up witnessing violence and it’s all they know. I should know – I grew up witnessing violence and did use some abusive language and behavior with my children at times until I realized the harm it was doing. Then I sought professional counseling for help and it changed my life!

Abuse wouldn’t happen if abusers wouldn’t choose to abuse. That’s so true. It’s not the victim’s fault if a man chooses to hit, choke or bite a woman, as Chris has now admitted he did.

But n the other hand, it is the victim’s fault if she keeps going back for more. As Oprah says, “If he hits you once, he’ll hit you again!”

Men and boys, quit hitting and berating women! You can’t get a good one to stay with you if you mistreat her. And you do want a good one, don’t you?

The additional funds will go to women’s shelters across the state.

From the story on the NDVH website:

Over the last five years, The Meadows Foundation has contributed approximately $3.1 million to 29 domestic violence service providers throughout Texas.

“We recognize that domestic violence agencies are struggling this year to serve as many families as possible, even in the face of budget and staff reductions,” said Bruce Esterline, Vice President for Grants.

“Because of the great need, our foundation will continue to review requests for emergency funding throughout 2009.”

Video selected as winner of Massachusetts teen dating violence PSA project

June 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

“Cry for Help” is the name of the video selected by a vote of over 1,000 students in Middlesex County MA to be used as part of a teen dating violence project this Fall by the Middlesex District Attorney’s office.

The video was selected from six finalists, after 200 students on 35 teams produced videos for the contest.

According to Middlesex Co. DA Gerry Leone, the winning students will now work with Boston ad/pr firm Conover Tuttle Pace (ctpboston.com) to professionally edit the video and then submit it to TV stations across Massachusetts for airing.

“This was a project for teens by teens, and our hope with the project was to help spark a positive dialogue about healthy relationships,” Leone said.

“We want to congratulate today’s winner and commend all of the students who participated in this project for their leadership in speaking out against teen dating violence. They have helped send a clear message that physical and verbal abuse have no place in a healthy relationship.”

The winning entry was submitted by a group of six students from Somerville (MA) High School: Mitch Freitas, Jason Corey, Aakash Sharma, Jerry Alphonse, Anthony Bohan, and Stefanie Vivian.

The District Attorney’s Teen Dating Violence PSA project, created in conjunction with Middlesex Partnerships For Youth, Inc. and REACH Beyond Domestic Violence, was initiated in an effort to spark a positive dialogue and encourage teens to speak out against teen dating violence.

Launched in April, it asked high school students from throughout Middlesex County to create and produce their own PSAs on the issue of teen dating violence.

The six PSA finalists were selected from those entries by a panel of school personnel, domestic violence experts, and members of the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

Recent nationwide studies show that one in three teenagers report knowing a friend or peer who has been hit, punched, kicked, slapped, choked or physically hurt by their dating partner.

Youth between the ages of 16 to 24 experience the highest per capita rate of intimate partner violence.

Six videos selected as finalists in student dating violence video contest

June 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Six videos were selected by a committee in early June as finalists in a contest for the video to be used in a teen dating violence program to be used near Boston, sponsored by Middlesex County MA District Attorney Gerry Leone.

Over 200 students on 35 teams competed in the contest to produce the video to be shown to students across Middlesex County, beginning this Fall.

The winner will be selected in a vote by over 1,000 teens living in Middlesex County.

Click here to see all six of the videos. They are all listed from the top to bottom of this YouTube.com page.

“The best communicators about teen dating violence are the students themselves,” Leone said. “I want to thank each student who produced these PSAs for their leadership in speaking out against teen dating violence.”

“These PSAs touched on many important issues – from the impact of physical and verbal abuse to the difficult situations that teens are placed in when confronted with abusive relationships. Violence is never part of a healthy relationship – and we hope that these PSAs will spark an important dialogue and encourage young people to have healthy relationships free from abuse.”

Police suspend search for 9-month old in Lake Lewisville

June 18, 2009 · 1 Comment

Anybody know where little Daisja Weaver is? According to news reports, she is still missing. Here’s the story:

The search was suspended yesterday afternoon for 9-month-old Daisja Weaver, whose dead body was thrown by the baby’s father into Lake Lewisville last week according to the mother, Dallas police said today.

Lewisville Fire Department divers have searched the location provided by the child’s mother despite the poor visibility underwater and treacherous lake conditions, but found nothing, Dallas police Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse said.

The investigation continues into the child’s disappearance and a $15,000 reward remains in effect, Janse said.

The search for the baby started last week after her mother Tamaira Creagh, 19, reported that her daughter had been kidnapped from their Far North Dallas apartment.

According to police, the parents had provided conflicting reports surrounding the infant’s disappearance.

Creagh later told authorities that she had found her daughter’s body in their apartment on June 8  and that the baby’s father Alandus Weaver, 20, made her drive to the lake.

Weaver, 20, is accused of tossing his dead daughter’s body to a sandbag and tossing her body from the bridge.

Weaver and Creagh have been arrested on charges of tampering with evidence.

In a written statement, Creagh’s attorneys said  that their client is the victim of long-term domestic abuse by Weaver.

She is six months pregnant with Weaver’s child and was forced to participate in the cover-up, the attorneys said.

Infant’s body dumped in Lake Lewisville by parents?

June 17, 2009 · 1 Comment

Here’s a disgusting story in the Dallas Morning News about a young couple who might have thrown their dead baby’s body attached to a sandbag into Lake Lewisville to cover up the nine-month-old’s murder last week.

Police were at the lake June 15 searching for the remains of Daisja Weaver, whose mother, 19-year-old Tamaira Creagh, claims were thrown into the lake by the father, 20-year-old Alandus Weaver.

But the mother has changed her story several times, from an alleged break in and sexual assault to claiming that she so feared Weaver that she didn’t tell anyone.

The mother reported the baby missing to police last Tuesday.

It will be interesting to learn what really happened.

Apparently the baby is dead, bless her little soul.

Investigators are now working to sort out the facts in the case while continuing to search for the missing girl.

Family members told NBC5 News in Dallas that the baby, who was born premature, is physically challenged.

The child’s mother was taken to the hospital for minor injuries last Tuesday night and was later released.

Anybody know more details?
