Could a campus shooting be stopped by a student carrying a gun?

March 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Could a campus shooting be stopped if students and/or faculty were carrying guns? That’s one of the questions being debated in the Texas legislature today. The legislation was introduced by Rep. Joe Driver, (R-Garland).

Support for the bill is led by Students for Concealed Carry on Campus.

Arguments for and against are listed in this AP article in the Dallas Morning News today:

Could a campus shooting be stopped by a student carrying a gun? A public hearing on a bill that would allow licensed concealed gun carriers to take their weapons to college is scheduled for today.

• Proponents say that if students and instructors were armed it could cause would-be killers to rethink their plans. And if someone did open fire, there would be others around to stop the shooter before police could arrive.

• Opponents say students and faculty will live in fear of classmates and colleagues, not knowing who might pull a gun over a drunken dorm argument or a poor grade.

• According to the Brady Campaign Against Gun Violence, similar bills have been filed in 18 states since 2008 and all have failed.

• Texas is one of seven states currently considering legislation.

• Of the 150 House members, 70 support the bill, and 12 of 31 senators have signed in support.

Guns on Campus: Bills would allow guns at college

March 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

There’s an interesting bill being debated before the Texas legislature today, whether students and faculty should be allowed to get hand gun licenses and carry concealed handguns on college campuses across the state to protect themselves in case some nut-job decides to start shooting students as happened last year at Virginia Tech, at Northern Illinois and years ago at UT.

Read the Associated Press article here.

Question is, should domestic violence victims also be encouraged to carry concealed handguns for protection? An average of three women and four children are killed everyday across the US.

I say yes! Get a gun and learn to use it to protect yourself and others.

Evidently Rihanna has obtained a protective order against Chris Brown after all.

The order, filed yesterday in Los Angeles Superior Court, says Brown must not “harass, strike, threaten, assault (sexually or otherwise), follow, stalk, molest, destroy or damage personal or real property, disturb the peace, keep under surveillance, or block movements of” Rihanna.

The three-year order will not expire until March, 2012.

Chris Brown charged with two felonies

March 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The L.A. County District Attorney charged Chris Brown with felony assault and making criminal threats against Rihanna yesterday.

Brown and his attorney Mark Geragos did not enter a plea to the two felony charges. In a proceeding that took roughly 4 minutes and 20 seconds, the judge granted Brown’s request to move the arraignment to April 6th.

Brown, who stood emotionless in court, spoke only four words to the judge: “yes,” “yes,” and “yes ma’am.”

After Brown’s request to continue the case had been granted, the judge warned Brown, “You are not to annoy, harass, molest, threaten or use force or violence against anyone.”

The judge asked Rihanna’s attorney, Donald Etra, if there was a “no-contact order” in place to which Etra replied, “Miss Fenty [Rihanna] does not request such an order.”
